Maundy Thursday

Pange, lingua, gloriósi | Tell, tongue, the mystery
Córporis mystérium, | of the glorious Body
Sanguinísque pretiósi, | and of the precious Blood,
Quem in mundi prétium | which, for the price of the world,
Fructus ventris generósi | the fruit of a noble Womb,
Rex effúdit géntium. | the King of the Nations poured forth.

Nobis datus, nobis natus | Given to us, born for us,
Ex intácta Vírgine, | from the untouched Virgin,
Et in mundo conversátus, | and dwelt in the world
Sparso verbi sémine, | after the seed of the Word had been scattered.
Sui moras incolátus | His inhabiting ended the delays
Miro clausit órdine. | with wonderful order.

In suprémæ nocte coenæ | On the night of the Last Supper,
Recúmbens cum frátribus | reclining with His brethren,
Observáta lege plene | once the Law had been fully observed
Cibis in legálibus, | with the prescribed foods,
Cibum turbæ duodénæ | as food to the crowd of Twelve
Se dat suis mánibus. | He gives Himself with His hands.

Verbum caro, panem verum | The Word as Flesh makes true bread
Verbo carnem éfficit: | into flesh by a word
Fitque sanguis Christi merum, | and the wine becomes the Blood of Christ.
Et si sensus déficit, | And if sense is deficient
Ad firmándum cor sincérum | to strengthen a sincere heart
Sola fides súfficit. | Faith alone suffices.

Tantum ergo sacraméntum | Therefore, the great Sacrament
Venerémur cérnui: | let us reverence, prostrate:
Et antíquum documéntum | and let the old Covenant
Novo cedat rítui: | give way to a new rite.
Præstet fides suppleméntum | Let faith stand forth as substitute
Sénsuum deféctui. | for defect of the senses.

Genitóri, Genitóque | To the Begetter and the Begotten
Laus et jubilátio, | be praise and jubilation,
Salus, honor, virtus quoque | greeting, honour, strength also
Sit et benedíctio: | and blessing.
Procedénti ab utróque | To the One who proceeds from Both
Compar sit laudátio. | be equal praise.
Amen. Alleluja. | Amen, Alleluia.
