I've always been fascinated by microcosms--elaborate doll houses, lush terrariums, snow globes, and the like. Aquariums fit with that pretty well, especially ever since I discovered the alien world beneath the surface of the lake where my family usually spends their summer vacation. It's why I have one in my bathroom, where I can stare into it while brushing my teeth. Mine's not quite as large as this one, and is currently inhabited entirely by snails--though I'm planning on getting a fish in a week or so, once the newest set of plants have settled a bit--but it's the same idea: as close to pond-in-a-box as you can get.
