Music ask meme

Via--you guessed it--zmediaoutlet. Since Tumblr, for all its faults, seems to be better at coming up with ask memes, and Z is my window into Tumblr, these days.

I'll do this in abbreviated form--and no worries, a single track wasn't enough to give me a headache. :)

Gurrumul Yunupingu: new to me

This was actually the second song in the search results, so we cheated only a little. It's a very soothing song--I could see having it on in the evening while you're reading a book before bed or something.

Joanna Newsom: also new

Hm--this kind of bouncing piano tends to grate on my ear after a while, but the lyrics are quite good (though I needed to look them up; usually I'm more able to pick them up just from listening). I'd actually kind of like to hear a cover of this song. Something with a more blended instrumental arrangement and a singer with a fuller voice--the lyrics deserve something a bit more epic in scope.

Bohren & the Club of Gore: huh--the first page of results were all for full albums

Wow, this is super low-key. Makes me think of an after-dinner thing, where you're playing cards and drinking tea or wine or something. A nice background for just conversing with friends.
heh -- fair cop wrt Newsom's voice -- I'm come to embrace it as a critical feature of the songs and I like the way she plays with her own sound. I thought you might appreciate her lyrics (and Sapokanikan is a good example) - in terms of subject, allusion, word play, internal rhyme, and
treating the album and its sounds as a whole etc -- she's one of the best I've ever seen. thus endeth the plug!
Based on the piece in question, I'd say she definitely has chops as a writer--it would just be interesting to hear the song performed in a ... larger style? But I'm very glad you shared her--it's rare nowadays to find lyrics that function as poetry on their own.
