Fanfic ask meme

I keep borrowing these from deadlybride/zmediaoutlet because they're fun and I feel lazy about coming up with poll questions. Maybe next week, though.

L: What's the weirdest AU you've ever come up with?
M: Got any premises on the back burner that you'd care to share?
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
O: How do you begin a story--with the plot, or the characters?
P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an "architect" or a "gardener"? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)
Q: Do you have any discarded scenes/storylines/projects?
R: Are there any writers (fanfic or otherwise) you consider an influence?
S: Any fandom tropes you can't resist?
T: Any fandom tropes you can't stand?

Ooh, I'm interested in a lot of these, but I'll start with one so I don't hog them all. XD

S?
Ha!

...also, huh. I dunno. Interstitial domesticity?

Which is a very unsatisfactory answer, I suspect. Feel free to ask again. :P
Interstitial domesticity is good! XD Does it matter if it leaves the interstices and takes center stage in a fic, or do you prefer it to stay at the interstices always? (Because I think my very favorite things are those interstitial moments in canon/that canon might not have the space for, that remain interstitial even in the fanwork. Even if it's just like, half a line or a small scene in the midst of some longer story. Even if it requires the manufacture of some entire story just to get that little moment that's not even really related to said longer story....)

V or H?
Well, since these questions seem to be coming from the writing angle--I'm really really bad at long fics. Like, I mostly don't even bother anymore starting fics if I know they'll need to be long because I also know they almost certainly won't get finished. So... they usually wind up purely interstitial just because I don't bother trying to write the surrounding bits.

That being said--I do have one fic that started out as an interstitial, decided on its own to grow legs, and is currently waiting for me to get in gear and edit it into a unified, postable fic. Uh. Here (ordered by internal chronology): Respite 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4
He runs a hand through his hair, spiking it up like when he was 26 and merely Sam’s big brother. For a moment it’s like time has rolled backward a decade or more, except when Sam looks at him and thinks *how could I ever live without you?* it’s with the bone-deep knowledge that he couldn’t.

Favorite line(s)! <3333
Man, just reread it myself. Need to finish the dang thing.

Also, yeah--I was quite chuffed over that line myself. :D
V: A secondary (or underrated) character you want to see more of in fic?

Hmmm. I'm tempted to be snarky and say "canon John Winchester", but that's not really fair. :P

Actually, okay, that's the case for pretty much any answer I'd give. I've kind of stopped reading SPN fic because it seems to have become mostly porn or wildly disconnected from canon characterization or both. Usually both, I suspect.

So, characters who I'd like to see explored in ways that actually interacts with canon: John, Benny--Jody and Donna would be fun too. I like stories that involve logistics, and Jody's life in particular must have some very interesting logistics, given everything she's juggling. I wouldn't mind Mary, either. What did her year off-screen look like, hunting chupacabra with Ketch, etc?
// Jody's life in particular must have some very interesting logistics, given everything she's juggling// This would make a great fic, along the lines of Weekend at Bobby's. I love that structure.
Yeah--pretty much. I mean, apparently she fits in roller skating as well. :P

I loved the little glimpses into her life that we got in "Asa Fox".
H: How would you describe your style?

Very fond of run-on sentences, semi-colons, with a tendency to veer into excessive narration.
Courtesy of deadlybride: oh, heck--how about L, N for hilarity, and er... E, pick one of your little drabbles
L: What's the weirdest AU you've ever come up with?

Hm....possibly the SGA ficlet series where Jason Momoa's character (who's an alien) makes balloon animals in his spare time.

...Nah, just joking. It's totally the death fluff AU. Everything else is just applying already established tropes--oh wait, wait. I forgot. If we're talking structural weirdness, it's definitely the SGA one where the (very minor) character keeps skipping through potential futures and realizes at the end that he can't tell what's real anymore. That was a trip and a half to write.
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

:laughs and laughs:

You know the answer to this one already, Z. It's totally "Evil That Walks Invisible" (AKA That Monster MoL AU, for anyone else reading this). Mostly just because I'm impatient and we're slow writers. I want to be able to read it already, dammit! :P
E: If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it be about?

I've already written one tiny sequel to "Working Song", but it could be interesting to follow the adventures of happily-pampered!Sam and dude-I'm-totally-not-a-zombie!Dean as they become increasingly insular--with an increasingly baffled Heaven and Hell somewhere in the background, trying to figure out what the heck happened because where's the Righteous Man who's supposed to be on Alistair's rack?

Not sure what it would be "about", exactly. Perhaps--don't try to mess with soulmates, because it'll just screw with your long-term plans. I dunno. You'd probably have Ruby and Bobby trying to pry the boys apart, once Dean's return came to light, and the boys just ... ignoring everyone.

(Or--for "Arsonist's Lullaby" or whatever the title is--Sam down in Hell, roaming the vast, dark halls as the Boy King, keeping Dean safely tucked away somewhere safe, visiting only occasionally, when he needs to be reminded of why he fought his way into Hell to begin with.)
B: Any of your stories inspired by personal experience?

Uh... just Respite, I think. The location there is based very heavily on our family's annual summer getaway. Pretty much all the rest of what I write is the invention of my own pure brain. (Well, and Google Maps and Bing.)
LOL! Mine is ever place wise anything to do with me, I write American, I live in England, lol. I have a few that are based on personal experience from other perspectives though.
How about F (because we were just talking about h/c fics) and P?
F: Care to share a favorite hurt/comfort fic?

Oh shoot, go for the hard ones, why don't you. :P

Uh. I generally avoid h/c as a genre? Pretty much entirely, if I can? I tend to prefer stories which are about the characters actually doing stuff. But give me a minute, there's gotta be something.

Hm.

Okay--I don't know if this strictly counts, but it involves Sam getting his jaw broken and Dean worrying about how much baby food to buy him, so I'll go with it: Unspoken.
P: Are you what George R. R. Martin would call an "architect" or a "gardener"? (How much do you plan in advance, versus letting the story unfold as you go?)

Hmmm.... formal gardening, perhaps? That is, I need to have at least the basic structure of the story figured out, so I have an end towards which I'm writing. However, if I over-plan things too far in advance, it basically kills the story and it just turns into an extended plot summary.

(Well, really, if I'm being completely honest, neither: given the length of most of my fics, we're talking terrariums or miniature Lego kits.)
X: A character you enjoy making suffer.
Y: A character you want to protect.

This ask meme is making me realize how, uh, boring I am as a writer/reader. Because the answer to both is "kinda nobody, I think?" That is, I don't enjoy stories that focus overly on the suffering, but neither do I find stories in which a character is coddled to be interesting.

The closest thing I have to an answer for Y, I guess, is "the relationship between Sam and Dean". I came across a story yesterday that I knew deserved a kudos for being so well-written, but I couldn't bring myself to actually leave one because it was about the utter destruction of their relationship--leaving no room even for the hope of a future reconciliation. And I'm just not interested in that, at all. The more brother-married those two are, the happier I am.
Oh I find it harrowing reading about either the Winchesters' or J2's relationship being demolished! The only time I can tolerate that is when it's rebuilt stronger at the end. I'm also not a fan of coddling - if my heroes are hurt, I like them to be stoic and brave about it, I hate when there's too much comfort in H/Cs.
