not dead

Just swamped at work and trying to decide what (if anything) to do about LJ's servers getting moved to Russia. Move to DreamWidth? Stay here? Take this as an excuse to unplug?

Well, probably not the latter, but it's a good time to sort of reassess, you know?

A lot of people seem to be moving over to DW. I've had a free account over there for years. I hate their payment system, it's not as easy as it is on LJ but with the Russians taking over it's only a matter of time before they start censoring blogs or deleting them. I suggest you back up LJ to DW. I already did that myself.
I take it that last comment describes DW?

I've pretty much settled on staying put, I think--unless there's actual reports of services/security being affected in the wake of the shift.

DW want's a lot more money (35.00 regular account or 50.00 premium) and gives you less for it. Also, their payment system sucks. You have to buy points to pay for your membership, no PayPal. You can pay with a check or credit card.

Good to know! I hadn't gotten to the point of doing a price-comparison yet, but maybe I won't bother.
If they were more a mirror for LJ I would have switched over but I'm paying a lot less for an LJ account. I'm not happy about them sending the servers to Russia but I don't really use my blog for more than following my fandoms, fanfiction writers and friends. If you have a free account with DW they only allow you to follow 25 things so you have to pick and choose what you do. I think LJ allowed you more than 25 but I don't remember.
As an LJ user not from or in the US, it makes no difference to me in any way whatsoever. I'm not sure it would make much difference to a US user either.

That's pretty nearly the conclusion I've come to, especially given how much nicer LJ's interface is.
I'm backing up on DW on a regular basis. Oddly enough, LJ is about the only site working fairly well for me with my computer issues!
That is funny! Though inconvenient, I suspect.

I should probably do the DW backup as well, especially as I have some friends who have moved over there entirely.
Ha--me either, I suspect. I really like LJ's interface. Everything's the way I want it, and the people I actually interact with semi-regularly seem to all be staying, so....
