One can survive without it but does one want to? I can take it or leave it so I don't worry about it. It's people that can't put down their phones for a second that need to worry about it. If everything ever went dark they would all be lost!
Well, I have no plans for shutting it out entirely--too many online friends/communities/projects. But I do feel the need to somehow ... I dunno. Corral it a bit more or something. So it doesn't wind up eating my mornings, evenings, and weekends.
I only get on in the evening and I don't use my phone at all to answer emails and things I would do at night on the laptop. I will never be one of those people that almost knock me over or hang out at green lights or weaving the road because they have their fingers working their phone and can't be bothered to pay attention to what they should be doing...like say driving.
Good for you! While I'll never be one of those drive & text people (I have a very, very dumb phone), I definitely struggle with not spending all of my non-work time online. Hope you never have the same issue, because it's very annoying.
