theme and variations

I love a good theme and variations, and this is one of my absolute favorites--partly, I admit, because I got to experience a wonderful performance by a good friend of my Dad's and one of his (my Dad's) students. It's great fun to watch the cellist playing as madly as the violinist, which rarely happens--especially when so many bow strings break in the process that you half wonder whether they'll last through the piece.
