some things,
she told him,
ought not be said.
particularly if they're true.

if you truly believe that,
he responded,
(truly, truly)
you are not the woman i thought until now that i knew.
lies by omission are still lies.

she said nothing more,
and they both knew what that meant.

(there is such a thing as tact,
she thought,
but he wouldn't have been able to hear.)
