This was really hard. Honestly, I'm not sure I actually managed it--more than a few cases are me going "okay, think of just one book by author X", which is probably cheating. But if I hadn't, the first 8 books would have been by Jasper Fforde, since I got all of them from the library yesterday. Several of my favorite authors didn't make it onto the list at all, but that's inevitable when you're writing down a train of thought instead of making a systematic list. (Missing: Diana Wynn Jones, Charles Williams, Patricia C. Wrede, to name a few.)
Really? They're all excellent (although the Iliad is a bit long) and definitely worth taking a look at.
